BSD Robotics

BSD Robotics

Overview

BSD Robotics is considered the world leader in the design, manufacture and supply of high technology laboratory instruments used in the initial processing of dried bio-samples, such as blood. The company’s robotic instruments are used  in applications such as neonatal screening and in DNA-related fields such as forensics, animal/plant breeding, HIV testing, drug discovery and bone marrow transplant.

BSD's products are now used by the world’s leading screening laboratories. BSD has in place distribution and licensing agreements with major suppliers of newborn screening systems and DNA sampling systems worldwide, including PerkinElmer, Roche Diagnostics and Whatman.

BSD also sells its instruments directly to international end-users, such as the FBI, and has a marketing/technical support presence in the USA.

All BSD products are certified to standards set by CSA (Canada and USA), CE, and ISO 9001:2000.

BSD is also currently developing and releasing versions of its equipment built specifically for a series of new and innovative bio-sample collection devices developed by BioSpot LLC. BSD is licensed to market BioSpot’s disposables in some markets.

In 2007, BSD won the prestigious Premier of Queensland’s SMART Award, for innovation.

Business Opportunities (i.e Partner, Joint Venture, Distributor, Agent, End User)

BSD’s robotic systems, as well as the new disposable collection devices now being released by BioSpot, are recognised as having potentially wide application in fields such as genomics, pharmacogenomics, and molecular diagnostics. BSD is interested in establishing arrangements with new strategic alliance partners which are interested in the automation of dried sample processing in these new areas of application. BSD has a proven and successful track record in the development of customized versions of its instruments to meet the needs of specific applications, including the creation of OEM instruments.

In non-neonatal fields, BSD is also interested in finding well established and credentialled distributors / agents, preferably with in-house service capabilities in geographical areas including south Asia,  South/Central America, Canada, and Eastern Europe.

Technology/Products and Services Description

BSD’s product range incorporates both automated and semi-automated robotic equipment for the initial processing of dried bio-samples on media.

Traditionally, this media has comprised filter paper in various forms, but increasingly includes foam, and swabs. The BSD 600 is a semi-automatic punch instrument, with versions available for punching sample disks from all of the filter paper based media types available in the market today. A version is also soon to be released for VibraSwabs.

The BSD 1000 is a fully automated punch robot, with versions available for all filter paper media in suitable cassettes, including BioDisks. A version is also soon to be released for VibraSwabs.

The BSD Maestro system, to be released in late 2007, will allow for overnight processing of cassetted filter paper samples in high throughput situations.

The BSD LaserCutter is a robotic instrument for cutting swabs by laser, and therefore totally avoiding the potential for cross-contamination. The LaserCutter can be used to cut BioSpot Swabgrips in a fully automatic mode, and regular swabs in a semi-automatic mode. When traditional swabs are retrofitted with retro-type SwabGrips, the system also operates automatically.

Competitive Advantages

BSD Robotic’s Competitive Advantage relates to its unique and specialized nature of its robotic equipment, designed to cater for processing of dried samples on media. Because of their market-leading features, BSD’s instruments represent the gold standard in their field.  All significant aspects of BSD’s designs are covered by strong international IP.

BSD prides itself on the standard of its personalised international service and support.
