BioPharmica Limited (ASX:BPH) is an Australian Stock Exchange listed company, developing biomedical research with universities, hospitals and research institutes. BioPharmica provides early stage funding, product focus and commercial strategies, whilst the institutional partner provides the majority of the infrastructure and research expertise.
BioPharmica currently partners with several academic institutions including University of Western Australia, Western Australian Institute of Medical Research, Swinburne University of Technology and RMIT University.
BioPharmica has also started Molecular Discovery Systems (MDSystems) in order to aid in the development of BioPharmica’s projects as well as providing services to academic institutions and the pharmaceutical industry. Currently MDSystems has collaborations with GE Healthcare, WAIMR, UWA, Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, University of California SF and ISA.

- For all technologies; companies interested in licensing, co-development or other types of partnerships.
- Molecular diagnostics infectious disease test; hospitals and pathology laboratories interested in licensing or co-development (clinical trials).
- Nanoprobe; Manufacturers of biosensors interested in increasing the capabilities (portability, sensitivity, range) of current devices or devices in development by incorporating a novel SERS probe.
- Brain Anesthesia Response (BAR) monitor: Hospitals wishing to conduct clinical trials. Manufacturers of equipment for surgical theatres that want to add capabilities to current monitors or monitors in development. Companies/Institutions wishing to explore the use in neurodiagnostic applications.
- Biomarker Discovery, Tissue Imaging, High Throughput and High Content Screening, Image Analysis and validation.
Current Projects include:
- Molecular Discovery Systems, a 100% owned subsidiary of BioPharmica: Core expertise is in high content/throughput cell and tissue based imaging and analysis. The company’s focus is on the validation of targets and biomarkers using high content capture techniques and analysis. The research and development pipeline is focused on theranostic discovery and validation linking therapeutics and diagnostics in a spatio-temporal context to create a range of direct and indirect commercial opportunities. Molecular Discovery Systems has ongoing international collaborations in automated tissue image analysis, Mathematical modelling and Database and storage structures.
- Tumor suppressor gene / cancer biomarker: Primary target disease is cancer (breast, ovarian) with potential applications also in neurodegenerative, infectious and metabolic diseases.
- Molecular Diagnostic Test for Infectious Diseases; Current product can simultaneously detect 23 types of bacteria from a single sputum sample. Potential to be developed for other bacteria and biological samples.
- Nanoprobe: sensitive and versatile technique based on Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) for detecting chemicals at trace levels in complex mixtures. For medical (i.e. glucose monitoring), environmental and defense applications.
- Brain Anesthesia Response (BAR) monitor: Medical monitor to assist anesthetists to keep patients optimally sedated during surgery. May also have applications in neurodiagnostics and monitoring of drugs in neurological disease trials.
BioPharmica partners with academic institutions on Projects that have excellent scientific merit, strong IP position and commercial potential. Research is carried out by the acknowledged experts in the field while BioPharmica provides the commercial direction and focus.
