 FABLS

FABLS Fluorescence Network
(Fluorescence Applications in Biotechnology & Life Sciences)

Overview

FABLS is a network of research and industry members from 70 organisations around Australia. It brings together teams with world-class expertise in biological and biomedical sciences, chemistry, physics and optoelectronics.

R&D groups carry out a range of multifaceted research programs, including:

  • the development and application of novel fluorophores with properties derived from chemical synthesis, bio-processes, or identification of naturally occurring fluorescent compounds;
  • the diagnostic use of fluorescence to elucidate molecular environments, especially in biological systems;
  • the use of fluorophores in molecular and cellular dynamics, biological/medical imaging, clinical applications, proteomics, genomics, and flow cytometry;
  • the application of time-gated fluorophores and instrumentation for high throughput; high sensitivity, low background diagnostics;
  • the application of techniques (such as confocal FRAP, surface enhanced and multiphoton and FTIR microscopy) for identification and localisation of trace chemicals with high temporal and spatial resolution;
  • the development of industrially significant instrumentation for biotechnology, medical and bioengineering.

Business Opportunities (i.e Corporate Alliances/Partnerships)

Research and Development focussing on enabling technologies investigating and commercialising

  • real time multiplex detection of pathogens in an agricultural (food and environment), veterinary and a health care setting,;
  • purification of cell populations and the sorting of cells such as stem cells; and
  • the development of cellular biosensors applicable in the area of drug discovery.

FABLS is developing precision instrumentations, such as flow cytometers, reagents and software to expand the boundaries in diagnostics, and the treatment of disease.  Our diverse range of applications of the technology have a good deal of connection between the three programs being pursued, eg antibody development, customisation and development of flow cytometers, which serves as the base for many applications. Where we ultimately place emphasis of application is determined in the partnership with companies’ interests.

Technology/Products and Services Description

  • Applications of flow cytometry prototypes for particular applications;
  • Updated flow cytometry;
  • Antibodies;
  • Biosensors;
  • Fluorescent proteins;
  • Imaging and software;
  • Kits for pathogen detection

Competitive Advantages

  • Opportunity to leverage the research dollar by a factor of up to three, ie for every $1 contributed by a company, between $3 and $4 of research can be undertaken;
  • Link the vast array of resources in Universities and other research organisations in Australia to create multidisciplinary research teams to work on a research project;
  • Cooperative research where the stakeholders - companies, researchers and government -work together to identify research priorities and their commercialisation;
  • Management of people from over 70 research organisations with world-class expertise in genomics, proteomics, bioengineering, medical diagnosis, and industrial microbiology;
  • Managed as an incorporated entity, wherein projects are managed transparently in accordance with IP agreements;
  • Exclusive access to IP;
  • Education and training
