Medigard is an innovative international medical device company. Medigard’s speciality is the design and development of retractable safety devices for the global market.
Medigard’s unique vacuum technology has led to the creation of a number of single use medical devices that are safer, affordable and more efficient than alternative devices currently available.
Based in South East Queensland, Australia, Medigard was established in 1999. It listed on the Australian Stock Exchange in February 2004. The directors and executives have extensive business and commercialisation experience at senior levels and are supported by an award winning design and production team.
Given the statistics surrounding the incidence of needlestick injuries to health care workers (over 1 million cases worldwide are reported every year), the potential market for an effective, reliable and affordable alternative that assures safety, is extremely large. Having developed a range of products that can satisfy that market need, Medigard is now forming strategic alliances to assist in bringing those products to market. Medigard is seeking manufacturers and distributors that can supply the global market with the initial concentration being on the USA.
The complete suite of the Medigard products includes a syringe, a blood collection device and a cannula/catheter inserter each with the purpose of eliminating needlestick injuries to heathcare workers around the world. Medigard has also developed an intravenous valve that is both an integral component of the cannula/catheter inserter and a product suitable for use in its own right.
Medigard’s unique leading edge design uses the power of vacuum to draw dangerous needles back into the plunger of its various devices. Simple but elegant, the products are easy to use and technically superior to the cumbersome and costly spring and sheath mechanisms of competitor products.
All of Medigard’s products have been developed under strict quality control conditions in accordance with international medical devices standard ISO 13485. The robustness and professionalism that this provides is matched by the international patent protection afforded to each of the products.
Key advantages and benefits of the Medigard products include:
- The vacuum design means fewer parts and hence a lower cost of production. That means a competitive retail price - a key factor and one that others have found difficult to overcome.
- Lack of aerosoling – a dangerous spray of blood and unused serum from the needle upon retraction. Many competitor devices using spring mechanisms actually cause aerosoling to occur.
- Interchangeability of needles - using the international Luer connection
- For our blood collection device - compatibility with standard blood collection and blood analysis tubes
- For our cannula - two way valve and unique secure attachment
- For our intravenous valve - positive flow preventing the possibility of blood clotting.
