Optiscan’s unique and patented technologies enabled high-powered microscopes to be miniaturised and used inside the body. The technology enables microscopic imaging of up to 1000 times magnification to be achieved. Doctors can use the technology to instantly see cellular level details of tissue without the requirement to surgically remove tissue (biopsy).
Pentax has been licensed by Optiscan to use its patented miniaturised microscope technology in the field of flexible endo-microscopes.
Optiscan has also announced a collaboration with the Carl Zeiss Group in Germany for the use of its patented miniaturised microscope technology in rigid endoscopes in certain selected key Zeiss markets. Optiscan retains rights to separately commercialise other segments of the US$ 1 billion rigid endo-microscope market.
Optiscan also commenced direct sales of Optiscan FIVE 1, a Fluorescent In-Vivo endo-microscope tailored for the pre-clinical research market.
Optiscan has identified new opportunities within the fragmented market structure for rigid endoscopes that are exhibiting the characteristics of strong and unmet medical needs. The Company is currently undertaking detailed evaluation of a number of endo-microscopy applications in certain key fields of women’s health.
Optiscan has a global business.
The global market for flexible endoscopes is estimated at $1.2Billion per annum. Optiscan partnered with Pentax, now a part of Hoya Corporation of Japan, to develop and market its miniaturised confocal microscope globally.
Optiscan is also developing a range of rigid endoscopes which could be used in such applications as obstetrics and gynaecology, orthopaedics, respiratory medicine, ophthalmology and keyhole surgery. Optiscan has partnered with Carl Zeiss, Germany for the first commercial development of a rigid endomicroscope, but is looking for other international companies to partner in the other medical fields applicable to rigid endoscopy.
Optiscan is also looking for investment to fast track the development and introduction of new products into these other fields of medicine.
Optiscan has one product on the market in its own name.
Optiscan FIVE 1 Research Instrument Optiscan’s miniaturised, high-resolution, hand held scanner has the potential to increase the scientific fields that can be effectively researched with confocal microscopes. New in-vivo research applications can increase demand from this significant and established market.
Optiscan has developed an instrument known as the FIVE 1, a Fluorescent In-Vivo Endo-microscope, tailored to the requirements of the research market. The FIVE 1 was released for sale in 2007, and has been sold into USA, Europe, Asia and Australia. During 2008, a number of distributors have been appointed increase the global market penetration of the product.
Optiscan also supplies the endomicroscope to Hoya for inclusion in the ISC-1000 which is now used in over 60 hospitals world wide and is distributed by Hoya.
The Optiscan confocal endomicroscope is the only endomicroscope on the market that offers variable depth imaging of human tissue, in vivo, in real time and with sufficient quality to allow surgeons to diagnose on the basis of the images and thereby avoid the need for biopsy.
