In order to work effectively and safely, good sleep is essential. The demands of shift work place a critical load on work performance. Another added burden often unnoticed and not easily identified is that of Sleep Disordered Breathing (SDB) - the most common physiological sleep disorder. Our aim is to reduce the risks associated with fatigue due to poor sleep and sleep disordered breathing in occupational health settings in order to:
- Improve overall employee safety
- Improve worker productivity
- Reduce accident rates
- Reduce costs:
- Insurance costs from decreased driver and industrial accidents - Anticipated reduced health insurance costs through improvement of employee health
- Raise awareness of the importance of good sleep
As part of fatigue management strategies in all industries: aviation, mining, transport and construction. Particularly in 24 hour high risk industries to significantly reduce, incident and accident rates.
Insurance companies to industry and individuals.
Corporate health companies providing pre-employment medicals and routine health assessments.
Education
SHS provides comprehensive education to OH&S personnel and employees. Vital topics covered include sleep hygiene, clinical implications of poor sleep and SDB, and identifying and managing people at risk.
Program implementation
SHS provides a highly cost-effective, tailored on-site screening program for employees using the latest validated technology. Screening takes place in the privacy of the individual’s own home. Results are downloaded and assessed by qualified sleep professionals, to identify and determine severity of risk if present. Results are returned within 48 hours with recommendations for follow-up where required. SHS will liaise with local medical specialists where needed to ensure appropriate medical or therapy intervention.
Competitive Advantages
SHS the first company to provide on-site education and training to OH&S staff to triage for the risk of SDB as a cause for fatigue in the workplace. Sleep, fatigue and work = high-risk combination.
The program is an important addition to existing OH&S activities with outcomes of improved employee health and productivity, with less fatigue-related incidents. Healthy sleep is not just important to the individual employee health; it is an important element of a comprehensive approach to OH&S.
“The program having been trialled in one section of an organisation is now rolling out to other departments and sites. The SHS sleep education and screening program has highlighted to us the significance of managing this aspect of health in order to reduce fatigue and improve productivity."
